Photo AlbumHistory of the Region About the McCroskey Regional Historical & Genealogical Society ...

The McCroskey Regional Historical & Genealogical Society was formed in
October 2004 by a group of area residents interested in preserving and
celebrating the rich heritage and history of the region and its people. The
society takes its name from the notable Mary Minerva McCroskey of whom
the area's 5,600-acre state park is named. The park was donated to the state
of Idaho in 1955 and is dedicated to the memory of frontier women and the
hardships they endured. The park straddles the Idaho/Washington border
and the Benewah/Latah County line on the Idaho side.

One of the first projects initiated by the society is an oral history program
aimed at preserving the memories of the area through the voices of its
"old-timers". The region is blessed with a rich and diverse cultural heritage
represented by Native Americans from the Coeur d' Alene reservation, of
which comprises all of W. Benewah County, Dust Bowl emigrants who
came to the area in the 30s and 40s to farm and ranch the fertile valleys,
loggers drawn to the area's vast timber lands and miners who flocked to the
area in the latter part of the nineteenth century after gold was discovered in
North Idaho.

The society's major role is to acquire, preserve and document the history of
the area and its people through historical photographs, documents, records and
relics from the past and to educate the community about the area's history and
the importance of preserving this history for future generations.

This society is entirely supported by the dues and generosity of its members
and other public and culturally spirited citizens and businesses. Gift contributions
and new members are always welcome. To donate or join you may send your tax
deductible contribution to: McCroskey Regional Historical & Genealogical Society,
