Oral History Project
The Society has started an oral history project aimed at preserving the
history
of the area and its people through the voices of its "old-timers".
If you are a
long-time resident of the area or a descendant of a long-time resident
of the
area we would like to interview you! If you or someone you know is interested
in being interviewed for the project we encourage you to contact
the society
to make arrangements. Transcriptions of these oral histories will
be maintained
by the society and will be available for public viewing.
Local Women in History Project
March is National Women's History Month and we can't think of a better
time
to honor the women of our community, both past and present, as well as
our
Society's namesake, Mary Minerva McCroskey. Each year the society will
choose
10 women from the area to feature in our "Women in History Scrapbook".
Members of the Society will be teaming up with these special ladies or
their
descendants (if they are no longer with us) to fully engage in the treasure
trove
of history these women have to share. Each woman will be honored on an
individual page of the scrapbook. The scrapbooks will be created in duplicate,
with one scrapbook remaining with the Society while the other scrapbook
to go
to one lucky recipient during our annual Local Women in History Honoree
dinner
to be held the first Saturday in March.
Local Men in History Project
We wouldn't think of leaving the men out of the spotlight. With October
being
National Family History Month and the men being the Patriarch of the family,
we
thought this would be the perfect time to honor local men throughout history
in
our surrounding community. As with the Local Women in History Project,
a
scrapbook will also be created honoring the men chosen for that year and
a
similar honoree dinner is held to celebrate their lives and contributions
to society
on the first Saturday in October. Both events have limited seating so
if you're
planning on attending you may want to get your tickets early!
How our selection process works!
Every member of the surrounding community served by our Society is encouraged
to nominate individuals that they feel are deserving of this honor. You
do not need
to be a member of this Society to nominate an individual or be nominated
yourself.
Nominees may be living or deceased. Once all nominations are received,
a ballot
listing each nominee with a short biographical sketch will be mailed out
to each
member of the Society for voting. Each member is asked to vote for 10
individuals.
The votes are then tallied and the honorees announced. In the event of
a tie creating
more than 10 honorees, the tie will be broken by the date the individual
began
his or her residency in our community. The person who was here first will
become
the winner.
Nominations for Local Women in History must be post marked by the first
Monday
in December with final ballots post marked no later than the first Monday
in Janurary. Nominations for Local Men in History must be post marked
by the first Monday in July
with the final ballots post marked no later than the first Monday in August.
